Sludge removal equipment testing is going well. Recently, workers proved the equipment that will be used to transfer highly radioactive sludge works as designed. This is a major accomplishment, as workers prepare to remove sludge away from the Columbia River in 2018.

Approximately 38 cubic yards of radioactive sludge is being stored in containers within a water-filled basin next to the K West Reactor; soon, that material will be pumped from the basin into containers for transport and storage on the Hanford Site’s Central Plateau.
